About the Limestone District School Board

About this position

Fulfill the legal mandate concerning compulsory school attendance as outlined in the Education Act. The indigenous School Attendance Counsellor is a district position supporting First Nations, Metis, and Inuit student from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The Indigenous Attendance Counsellor will consult with school personnel and parents/caregivers to provide cultural resources and strategies to support student success.

Duties and responsibilities

Perform the duties of School Attendance Counsellor as outline in the Education Act, Ministry of Education Regulations, and memorandums

Provide an intense level of support and intervention for a student of compulsory school age who is experiencing habitual absence from school.

Act as an advocate and promote effective relationships between the home, the school, Indigenous community resources, and community agencies.

Utilizing collaborative consultation, determine factors causing absenteeism by gathering information from the student, the home, the school, Indigenous community resources, Knowledge Keepers and Elders, and the community thereby seeking ways to improve attendance within a supportive framework,

Develop and maintain a close liaison with the student, school personnel, the home and/or Indigenous community resources and agencies.

Maintain appropriate documentation of case load and ongoing communication to school personnel as required by the Education Act.

Facilitate referrals to alternative placements in the school, within the district, and within community agencies.

Consult with schools on the assessment of high risk students including suicide risk assessment and provide support to school personnel and students in the aftermath of a traumatic event.

Participate in professional development opportunities as well as provide professional development to Board employees.

Qualifications, knowledge, and experience

Community College Diploma/Degree or University Degree in social science discipline such as Child and Youth Worker, Behavioural Science Technology, Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent combination of University Degree and related work experience

Hold a valid Ontario Drivers' License and access to a vehicle.

Indigenous ancestry

Experience working with indigenous students, familiar and communities Knowledge of local indigenous communities and service providers Knowledge of one or more indigenous languages an asset
