  1. The successful applicant must be able to work all 3 classes
  2. This position includes Adult Education
  3. Current Secondary Contract and Occasional Teachers are eligible to apply to this position.

Position Overview

The Gateway Alternative Education Teacher will provide academic support to students referred to the program who would benefit from an alternate school environment.  The objective of this role is to provide students with an opportunity to continue their education and develop appropriate social emotional learning skills using the student action plan and experiential learning.


Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Supporting student success through interaction and communication with students and families, to encourage and facilitate the use of strategies for attainment of credits towards successful completion of a secondary school diploma;
  • Using the D2L/Minds Online platform for course delivery, provide direct instructional and educational programming to students with an emphasis on Math and Science, focusing on attainment of compulsory credits and promoting effective learning strategies for students;
  • Attendance, assessment and reporting for students;
  • Ongoing communication with the Gateway Staff, Educational Services staff, Administrators;
  • Supporting programming accommodations and student safety plans for students;
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications & Experience

  • Math qualifications required
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion)
  • Knowledge of and experience delivering the Ontario Curriculum
  • Current Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate required;
  • Intermediate/Senior Qualifications in two subject areas (required) with English, Co-op, History, Geography, and/or Science preferred; 
  • PLAR experience an asset;
  • Student Success Experience preferred;
  • Proven ability to work effectively with students who are considered to be in the margins, difficult to engage, and may be suffering from mental health and/or addictions;
  • Proven ability to effectively implement IEP’s and UDL strategies in instruction and assessment;
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Understanding of Trauma Informed Practices.
